Excelling together towards a progressive and prosperous Melanesia

FLNKS COURTESY CALL TO MSG DIRECTORS GENERAL – DISCUSSION ON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND COOPERATION

The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat hosted a courtesy call on 23 September 2026, between the Director General, Dr. Anna Naupa, and the President of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS), Mr. Christian Tein. The discussions focused on advancing economic development and cooperation in support of Kanaks of Kanaky-New Caledonia. Following the adoption of the MSG Roadmap to Support FLNKS earlier this month, the dialogue represented an important step towards operationalising regional support through practical initiatives aimed at economic integration, infrastructure enhancement, and targeted investment partnerships.

During the meeting, Mr. Tein underscored the importance of sustainable and inclusive economic development as a cornerstone of self-determination, resilience and the well-being of Kanak Communities. He highlighted a range of structural economic challenges and emphasised the need for greater opportunities for participation, entrepreneurship, and private sector growth.

Mr. Tein was accompanied by a delegation of Kanak entrepreneurs and representatives named Hillarion Vama and Tagawa Franck of the business community, who also shared their perspectives on economic development priorities and the importance of fostering stronger regional partnerships.

In response, Dr. Naupa reaffirmed the MSG Secretariat’s enduring solidarity with the FLNKS and reiterated the Secretariat’s commitment consistent with its mandate, to support initiatives that promote sustainable development, economic empowerment, and regional cooperation.

The meeting concluded with Dr. Naupa and President Tein reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing economic cooperation and supporting a resilient, self-reliant, and prosperous future for Kanaky-New Caledonia and the wider Melanesian region.
