Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resource Management (ECCNRM)

 As a result of the re-alignment of the Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources Development programme, the MSG Secretariat is currently implementing three (3) major policy areas including Climate Change, MSG Forest Programme, and Fisheries & Marine Programme.

In brief, the current programmes are as follows;

Climate Change – MSG Needs – Based Climate Finance Strategy.

Under Climate Change is the MSG Needs-Based Climate Finance Strategy, which was the first of its kind to implement a COP Mandate.  The MSG Climate Finance Strategy was launched in 2019, in partnership with the UNFCCC Secretariat. The MSG Secretariat is now looking at working closely with the Members on reviewing the “Means of Implementation” framework of the Strategy towards development of national pipeline projects identified by the Members. This work complements current national efforts on reviewing and updating Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by the Members in meeting their reporting obligations under the Paris Agreement.

MSG Forest Programme

Under Natural Resource Management (NRM), the MSG Forest was implemented in partnership with GIZ and Griffith University;

Currently, the Secretariat is working with Members (in particular Vanuatu and Solomon Islands in a phased approach – phase I) and with technical assistance from Griffith University and GIZ to put forward a Proposal on an MSG Forest Programme (MFP) to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and other potential donors for financing to implement projects in high value primary forest areas and communities. The MFP Proposal is currently under development with GIZ as the MSG partner accrediting entity (AE) to the GCF.
