MSG Observer Mission Chair calls on Ni-Vanuatu to vote

The Chair of the Melanesian Spearhead Group [MSG] Observer Mission has today called on all Ni- Vanuatu to embrace their democratic rights and come out in numbers to cast their vote in the snap General Elections scheduled for 22 January 2015.


“Vanuatu is an important member of the MSG and we are calling on all Ni-Vanuatu to come out in numbers and participate in the Elections this Friday,” said Chair of the MSG Observer Mission who is currently on his way to do election observation on the island of Santo. The MSG Observer Mission is headed by Sir Francis Billy Hilly, former Prime Minister of Solomon Islands.


The MSG Observer Team attended a briefing by the Electoral Commission yesterday at the Melanesian Hotel followed by a short question and answer session at the MSG Head Quarters this morning to allow the team to finalize its observation and logistics plan.


“So far, considering the urgency in which the election has to be organized, we are happy to note that the Vanuatu Electoral Commission has very ably, while under challenging circumstances, prepared itself and the country for the elections,” Sir Francis Billy Hilly remarked. “Our teams will disperse around Efate and Santo having regard to the logistics on the ground and we will try to cover as many polling stations as possible.”


The Head of Mission arrived in Vanuatu on Sunday and the remaining members arrived by Wednesday, 20 January, 2016. The MSG Observer Mission will monitor the electoral processes, including the opening of the poll, the voting process, the closing of the poll and the counting of the ballots.

The other members of the mission include;

  2. Mr. Reuben Kaiulo - Former Electoral Commissioner - PNG

  3. Mr. Phillipe Ajapunya - Member of the Political Bureau of the Front de Liberation Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS)

  4. H.E Francis Agwi - PNG's High Commissionerto New Zealand

  5. Mr. Mohammed Saneem - Supervisor of Elections - Fiji

  6. Mr. Rence Sore - Secretary to the MSG Chair’s Office

  7. Mr.Navneel Sharma - Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fiji

The Mission will be supported by the MSG Secretariat staff.

“This will be the second time that the MSG is sending Observer Mission, the inaugural in the 2014 Fijian Elections demonstrating the MSG Leaders commitment to promote and strengthen democracy in MSG member states,” remarked Mr. Molean Kilepak, Acting Director General of the MSG Secretariat.
