The ECC Unit is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the Environment and Climate Change Declaration signed by the MSG Leaders on 30 March 2012.

The signing of the Declaration saw the MSG take leadership on climate change and environmental issues with the formal establishment of the Ministerial Committee and Technical Advisory Committee on Environment and Climate Change. The MSG Leaders Declaration on ECC has seen members committing themselves to developing framework arrangements for the four key commitments of the Declaration which are: Melanesia's Green Growth Framework (MGGF), Melanesia Terrestrial Commitment (MTC), Melanesia Blue Carbon Initiative (MBCI) and the Melanesia Green Climate Fund (MGCF).

ECC

The primary role of the ECC Unit is to facilitate strategic environmental, sustainability & climate change policy analysis and advice to the Membership. In this regard, the “Melanesia Framework for Action on Environment & Climate Change” document currently being developed will be used as the basis for continuous ECC policy consultations, awareness and advocacy at national levels. The document is a broad guiding framework that identifies priority areas and potential actions for sub-regional collaboration to deliver on the group’s shared vision on environment and climate change and their contributions to sustainable development.

The Secretariat will continue to support the Members in their efforts to implement national programs on natural resource management, environmental sustainability & climate change & support for Members obligations under the Multilateral Environment Agreements (MEAs) such as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) and at the same time, continue to advocate environment & climate change issues on behalf of its members with relevant regional and international organizations.

The Program is supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the German Society for International Cooperation owned by the German Federal Government.

MSG Green Growth Knowledge Management e-platform

The Leaders of the MSG In June 2013 launched the MSG Green Growth Knowledge Management e-platform. The aim of the e-Platform is to improve and support the exchange of agricultural and rural development information, more specifically designed to implement an online knowledge and learning platform for MSG. The Platform currently being redesigned will facilitate knowledge acquisition, sharing and exchange of best practices on green growth. The Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing is linked to the MSG Declaration on Environmental & Climate Change.

ePlatform

This initiative is supported through funding by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Co-operation ACP-EU (CTA) on the development of the Knowledge Management Platform. The CTA’s involvement in developing an e-Platform for Green Growth in the MSG was an outcome of the Workshop on Building Resilience on Climate Change hosted by Vanuatu in 2012.

The e-Platform is available via http://eplatform.msgsec.info
